Chapter 9: Finding Your Type Among the Nine

Larry follows up the claim that everyone is a little bit entrepreneurial with a harder question: which of the nine types are you. He doesn’t hand you a personality quiz for its own sake; the point is that your type determines which External API actually fits you. Some people are wired to copy a proven format and change one element, the Harvard-to-Stanford move; others are wired to run their hustle on someone else’s distribution instead.

Chapter 9: Finding Your Type Among the Nine

Larry’s argument is that forcing the wrong type of move, say, building from scratch when you’re actually a plug-in operator, wastes years. Knowing your type before you walk into a room changes what you pitch and what you ask for once the pen goes down. This ties back to the Business Model idea: the goal is always a trade that produces a monetary response, but the type shapes what that first trade looks like for you.

A person built for franchise-style replication does better copying something proven city to city than inventing a new category. A person built for pure distribution plugging does better attaching to an existing platform than trying to build an audience first.

Larry frames this as self-knowledge before strategy: figure out your type among the nine before you spend money finding out the hard way. None of the nine types skip preparation; PQRST still applies no matter which type you are once you’re in the room.

The types aren’t fixed labels for life in Larry’s telling, they’re a starting diagnosis you can outgrow. He walks through how to place yourself among the nine in the video below.
