Reading a Room With the OODA Loop

OODA is not one of Larry’s own terms. It is a decision loop from fighter pilot strategy: observe, orient, decide, act, and it maps onto reading a room better than most sales training does. Observe means what Larry’s SuperModel posture is built for: perfect listening position, pen in hand, phone away, eyes actually on the room instead of a screen. Orient is where Larry’s prep work pays off. If you ran PQRST before you walked in, you already know who matters, so orienting takes seconds instead of minutes.

Decide, in Larry’s world, usually means picking one person or one opening to move toward, not trying to work the whole room at once. Act is the part most people skip. They observe and orient all night and never actually decide to walk over and say something. The loop repeats. You do not observe once and coast, you cycle through it every time the room’s energy shifts.

A room changes the moment someone important arrives or leaves, and the OODA loop is how you notice that shift before everyone else does. Larry’s pen-drop close depends on this kind of read: you only set the pen down and go quiet once you have correctly decided the other person is ready.

Reading a room badly usually means skipping straight to act without observing first, which is how people interrupt the wrong conversation. The fastest operators in a room are not the loudest. They are the ones cycling observe, orient, decide, act the quickest without looking like they are doing anything at all.

Larry says he can read a shift in a room within a few seconds of walking in, which is his own claim about his instincts, not something you should assume you can measure. Practice the loop on purpose a few times and it stops being a framework and starts being how you naturally walk into any room.
