How to Be Introduced Instead of Introducing Yourself

A self-introduction carries only your own credibility. An introduction from someone else in the room carries theirs too, on loan. Larry’s External API logic applies directly here: the connector already has trust built in the room, and a good introduction plugs you into it. The move is to ask for it directly. Larry’s rule is to attack what you actually want, which in this case is someone else’s next thirty seconds of credibility.

How to Be Introduced Instead of Introducing Yourself

Give the connector the line to use. Most people who would gladly introduce you do not, only because they do not know what to say. This is the same summarize step from PQRST, aimed at someone else’s mouth instead of your own notes: give the connector a one-line version of you they can repeat without having to think. A vague ask, like “can you introduce me around,” gets a vague introduction back. A specific ask gets a specific one.

Thank the connector immediately after, not the next day. Larry’s karma rule treats a fast, specific thank-you as the deposit that gets you introduced again. Being introduced also solves the timing problem. You do not have to find an opening in someone else’s conversation, the connector creates one for you.

Larry says people have opened doors for him just because a mutual friend said one sentence on his behalf, though that is his framing of it, not a claim about anyone else’s experience. The best introductions are short. If the connector has to explain you for more than one sentence, the line was not prepared well enough.

Position yourself near the connector, not across the room from them, so the introduction can happen the moment an opening appears. Someone else’s sentence about you will always land harder than your own, which is the entire reason this move outperforms walking up cold.
