Silicon Valley’s Hottest “Joke Job” That’s Very Achilles Heel

The GTM Engineer: Silicon Valley’s Hottest “Joke Job” That’s Very Real

by @larrychiang IQ 88 #EUTWMPPM

Yo what up everybody.

I been thinking real hard about this job title that sound fake but it real. They call it GTM Engineer.

GTM mean Go To Market. Engineer mean they build stuff. So GTM Engineer is the dude (or girl) who build the machine that make money come in automatic.

It sound like a joke right? Like some LinkedIn guy just made it up after drinking too much coffee and playing with Clay tool too long. People laugh and say “that ain’t a real job bro” 😂

But guess what? It IS real. Companies paying big money for it. Like $200,000 or more. I seen the jobs. My mentor @LarryChiang would say this is 0D Chess. You start from zero and build the whole revenue wave. #EUTWMPPM

What they even do?

They make the computer find people who might buy. Then they make emails go out by itself. They hook up Salesforce and HubSpot and LinkedIn and all them tools so it just work.

Like magic but not magic. Just pipes and data and triggers.

Company get new funding round? Boom. GTM Engineer make the sequence fire. New head of engineering get hired? Boom. Another sequence.

They use Clay. They use AI. They stack no-code stuff and sometimes write little Python. Not real coding like Google but enough to make the money machine run.

Some people say it just #RevOps with fancy name. Some say it growth hacker in suit. But it work. One good GTM Engineer can do what whole team used to do. That why they get paid.

Why it feel fake tho

Cuz the title sound made up. “Engineer” make it sound like they building rockets but they really building email lists and lead scores.

But my mentor @6502838008 taught me: Competence > Confidence. Don’t chase the cult. Build the system.

This is the system. Perpetual Promotion Machine in action. #Web12 #cs183e #Duck9 #PowerOfZero

Who good at this job?

You gotta be half sales guy half builder guy. You gotta understand people want to buy and also how to make the computer execute protocalls

If you ex-SDR who learned tools, or marketer who can click buttons good, or even little bit code — you can do it.

Don’t be solipsistic. It not about you. It about the revenue tidal wave. #EUTWMPPM

The money part

They paying good. $150k to $300,000 sometimes. Cuz in AI time you need less people but the ones left gotta be smart with tools.

Startups love it. Big companies like OpenAI and them hiring too.

Future?

AI gonna make it easier. But the real ones who understand buyer brain + machine brain gonna eat.

Me personally? I engineering up my own momentum every day. From scarcity to abundance. Just like GTM Engineer do for companies.

If you want the revenue machine, get you a GTM Engineer. Or become one.

Zero to hero. No excuses. Just build.
