The karma chapter got its own full debrief this week, partly because Larry’s Nike story keeps coming up in other sessions. His claim, presented here as exactly that and nothing more, is that a handwritten thank-you note is what actually landed Nike as a sponsor. The chapter’s rule is short enough to fit on an index card: thank, forgive, tip, reciprocate fast.

The group spent real time on the word fast, arguing that karma delayed by a month barely counts as karma at all. One attendee said she’d started tipping a bit more than usual on every work-related meal and had noticed better service, nothing scientific, just a pattern. Another brought up the forgive piece as the hardest of the four, easy to thank someone, harder to let go of a deal that went sideways.
Larry frames karma as something you can track and channel, not a vague mood, which is part of why the group treats it as a chapter and not a platitude. The debrief turned practical fast, everyone picked one overdue thank-you note to actually send before the next meeting.
A few people admitted they couldn’t remember the last time they’d sent one at all. The room agreed the note doesn’t need to be long, it needs to go out within a day or two of the thing it’s thanking someone for.
Someone tied it back to the pen-in-hand habit from SuperModel, the same notebook that tracks meeting notes can track who’s owed a thank-you. Larry tells the Nike version of the story in the video linked below.
