The Difference Between Nerves and Readiness

Nerves and readiness feel almost identical in the body, faster heart rate, more alert, harder to sit still. The difference is not the feeling, it is whether you know why you feel it. Nerves are activation with no clear source, readiness is activation you can point back to specific prep.

PQRST is what turns one into the other: preview, question, read, summarize, test, until the activation has a reason. Someone who has done that work still feels keyed up walking in, they just know exactly what it is for. Someone who has not done the work feels the same activation and has no way to explain it, so it reads as fear.

House money changes the calculation too, because activation over a deal you cannot afford to lose is a different animal than activation over a deal you can walk away from. Neither state is calm, and that is worth saying plainly, the goal was never to feel nothing.

The video below shows what readiness looks like from the outside, it is not relaxed, it is focused. Trying to talk yourself out of the activation usually fails, naming what it is for usually works.

The next time your hands are shaking before a meeting, ask what part of your prep is still unfinished. Finished prep does not remove the nerves, it just relabels them as readiness.
